I have always loved school.  Now as an educator, I feel I am able to bring that passion to work every day, because I truly love what I do.  My focus as Principal is providing a safe and rigorous environment that holds high expectations for all students in the classroom, on the field or stage, and in the community.  I want every student, teacher and staff member to get up each morning excited about their day at school/work, excited to be a Mustang.  We accomplish this at MT by continuing to support rigorous learning for students and adults, valuing each team members contributions and ensuring there is an abundance of activities/clubs to keep everybody engaged throughout the year.  When this is done well, our school becomes the epicenter of our community and a pillar of all great things for our students.  I don’t take myself very seriously, but I take my role as school leader very seriously.  It is incumbent upon all of the adults in our school building to work tirelessly and challenge each student to meet their potential.  Also, to encourage them to chase their dream and always believe in them, even when they don’t believe in themselves.  It’s a great time to be a Mustang!  I was born and raised in Sacramento, attended UC Davis as an undergraduate and University of San Francisco and UC Berkeley for my graduate work.  I live in Sacramento with my wife Frances who is a third grade teacher and our two daughters, Chloe and Celia. I have learned more from them than I could have ever imagined.  #WeAreMT

Ms. Denise Soto

Ms. Soto has been in education for almost thirty years, teaching both English/Spanish in private and public schools.  She has been with the Elk Grove Unified School district for twenty years, having worked at Jackman and then on the Monterey Trail Region.  She has been a Vice Principal on the Trail since 2009.   Ms. Soto is a life-long learner and is currently completing a Masters in Leadership for the 21st Century at Saint Mary’s University in Moraga.  Often you might find her in the administrative office posing as a humble warrior!  She loves running 5ks, 10ks, or a half-marathon every now and then!

Lara Ricks is in her third year as a Vice Principal at Monterey Trail High School and 23rd year in Education. Prior to coming to Monterey Trail she taught Spanish, AVID and some PE. She is a graduate of San Diego State University with a Master’s from National University. This year she is overseeing Science, World Language, and Activities. She also holds the EGUSD record for number of emails sent in a single school year.

Mr. Adam Wood

Mr. Wood joined the MTHS administrative team in 2016; the same year as his esteemed look-alike Mr. Swanson. This is his 8th year in education, all of which have been in Elk Grove Unified. He previously worked as a math teacher and academic program coordinator. Mr. Wood attended school K-12 in EGUSD and afterwards received Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Mathematics from Arizona State University. Mr. Wood now works with the Mathematics and Social Science departments.  However, he is most famous among the students for his incredible ability to throw a “swoosh” shot in Cornhole games at lunch.

Mr. Charles Thatch

Mr. Thatch joined the Mustang family at the start of the 2016 -2017 school year, as a Vice Principal.  He has twenty-eight years of experience working in schools and of the twenty-eight years, nineteen years has been devoted to Educational Leadership.  Mr. Thatch has been fortunate to lead within student populations from k-Adult Education. As a result, he  has held positions ranging from Dean of students, Vice Principal, Guidance Administrator, Program Specialist and School Principal. During his career, he has led at the site, district and county level. Mr. Thatch holds a Master’s Degree in Educational Management (Tier I & II Credentials) and a Master’s Degree in School Counseling (Pupil Personnel Services Credential) from the University of La Verne and a Bachelor’s Degree with a concentration in Counseling Psychology from the University of the State of New York. While at Monterey Trail High School, he has been assigned to the following departments and responsibilities: VAPA, CTE, Technology, Safety and Security, Business, Health, Back to School Night, State Testing and all students with the last names of A-F.  Mr. Thatch enters each new day with an enthusiasm, seeking to implement the most effective ways to serve the students, families and staff member’s of Monterey Trail High School.
