Academic Literacy

Course Description:

This one Term nine week course focuses on metacognitive reading comprehension strategies to prepare student to understand and analyze rigorous texts. The goal is to help students become engaged, fluent and competent readers of the variety of texts that they will have to understand in their personal, academic, and professional lives. Students will analyze their own processes while developing the knowledge, strategies, and dispositions to become proficient to advanced readers. Curriculum includes analysis of text structures, instruction to help students become aware of how they learn and think, and instruction in comprehension strategies such as summarizing, vocabulary analysis, questioning and critical analysis. Students will develop a “tool box” of problem solving strategies for overcoming obstacles and deepening comprehension of texts in various academic disciplines. Through this intensive reading focus, students will develop self-confidence to become life-long learners and readers.



The main units of study will include the importance of reading, personal reading, reading for information, and reading strategies.   In addition to the Building Academic Literacy anthology, the course will also include an independent reading component designed to help build fluency and stamina as a reader, to increase comprehension and vocabulary skills, and to enjoy reading once again.
